US Highway 20 near State Route 18

SR 18 intersects US 20 near Norwalk Oio. US 20 is a 4 lane divided highway this is in a rural setting. The posted speed limit for some reason however is 55mph. The Ohio State Patrol is using aircraft – which were not even visible without retracing the route and finding them far off the road. There is a 2mi marked trap where they are timing traffic and have several troopers pulling vehicles over once they have you. By the time you are even aware of the fact you are being monitored – they simply pull you over and write a citation. This is not a high traffic area, nor in a high population area, and the area is marked specifically for this purpose.

Last year I was working at a business that was right beside US Route 20, remodeling and updating equipment there for 3 weeks in the summer, from 9 am to 4 pm daily. My co-worker and I started checking our watches every time we heard the state patrol car sirens turn on when they pulled the next poor victim over. From 9 to 4, the siren would go off every 18 to 20 minutes ALL day! We would hear the sirens twice as much if there were two patrols operating, which there were about half of the days. You need to also understand that the Highway Patrol post headquarters are less that a mile from were everyone was being pulled over. We got so used to the sirens, that the one morning as we were working, I looked at my co-worker and I said,"Something isn't right but I don't know what it is." He says to me, " you know, I was just thinking the same thing. Maybe I'm just hungry, it is almost lunch time." Then suddenly he says, "I know what it is! I haven't heard a single siren this morning!" I said, "Hey you are right! " At that moment we both looked out the window and both realized we had driven there in the rain that morning and that it had rained all morning and was still raining! Our brave, fearless state troopers had been scared off by raindrops, they didn't want the passing semi-trucks to get any mist on them! Never fear, the next day when the sun was back out, they had THREE patrol cars pulling speeders over, to make up the difference I guess. By the end of the day I was almost punchy from hearing that many sirens all day. Motorists just beware when going past this spot.
