US Highway 23 near Townline Road

Tawas City, MichiganMar 21, 20052 Comments

The trap is handled by the local Tawas Polic, Iosco County Sherrif and Michigan State Police and is heavily enforced. As you go north on US-23 at the Tawas City line, the speed limit drops from 55 to 45 to 35 between Townline Rd. and the Tawas River Bridge. Also going south out of town, the speed does not increase to 45 until about a mile south of the same Bridge and many motorists are picking up their speed too soon. The local constabulary thanks you for your financial contributions to the area as a tourist with a speeding ticket.

Comments:
This is still an area with businesses with considerable on and off road traffic. A limit of 55mph would be dangerous in that area. Safety is a viable reason for speed limits in certain areas.

The speed limit actually drops gradually over approximately one mile. It changes from 55 to 45 far south of the City limits then 45 to 35 at Bay Dr (another 1/2 mile) then it changes from 35 to 30 in the business district starting near Mitch's Pizza. There are three police department offices located in the Tawas City and East Tawas City limits. However, until recently there has been no road patrol by the Sheriff Department and the State Police generally are out of the Cities handling the workload for the rest of the County. I would challenge anyone to cite a traffic stop in that area made by the Sheriff Department in recent years. Possibly we should thank them for the work they did ensuring us a safe retreat.
