US Highway 27

Beware US Highway 27 Lumpkin, Stewart county Georgia: Speed trap operated by the city of Lumpkin. Lumpkin has annexed into the city limits a portion of highway (about one half a mile) for the purpose of generating revenue from traffic fines. What makes this so sinister and truly a speed trap is that US Highway 27 is nothing but rolling hills covered in scrub pines in this area with no hint of residential or commercial development. Nothing! US Highway 27 at this point is a full four lane highway with a wide grass medium. Approaching from the south there is road widening in progress, just as you approach Lumpkins speed trap, a DOT sign announces End of Work Area and a 55 MPH speed limit sign. Within just a few hundred feet is a small green sign, Lumpkin City Limits, followed by a 45 MPH speed limit sign. US Highway 27 at this point is a full four lane highway with a wide grass medium. This highway is built for 70 plus MPH. A speed limit of 55 to 65 would be a very conservative speed in this area. Your grandmother would not expect a 45 MPH limit in this rural area. This is were the Lumpkin Law lay in wait to ambush law biding citizens as they travel through this most depressed area of Georgia.

Comments:
Yes it is! I've been stung on Hwy 27. Going 65 in a 45 costs a couple hundred and that was pre-GA super speeder law (approx $400 now.)

It's a speed trap. The ticket I paid today was $209 (62 in a 45) with nothing.........absolutely NOTHING in site and certainly not the "City of Lumpkin".

I got caught here doing 70 mph or so the nice officer said. It was around 11:30pm on a Thursday night. The entire time we sat there, pulled over, we saw 0 cars go by. We saw no City of Lumplkin. I think I could throw a rock and hit the 55 mph sign from where we stopped. The 65 mph sign was only a 200 feet further on. The officer basically explained about the bit about the annexing when I said something about this. All but admitting that it was a speed trap. Honestly, I don't think he liked it anymore than I did. The fine was $209 for 62 in a 45. The officer was nice enough to not put my speed at 70.

It not only is a speed trap, they apparently have a policy of pulling people over for anything they can write for revenue- in my case, after 270,000 miles with nary a word from any of the thousands of cops I have passed, a citation for window tint being too dark. Unfortunately they don't exactly attract the best and brightest officers to podunk- not only did this one use profanity in front of my son, he admitted it was his 4th police job in a few years. And then they wonder why no one respects them...

Yes, it is definitely a speed trap. I too have been "caught" so that I might contribute $200 to the Lumpkin coffers. It's a shame, and should be a crime! And I told them so when I sent my check.

I am very aware of the speed trap in Lumpkin, Ga. on us 27. I had to pay $200 for nothing. It is not about justice or safety, it is all about revenue. We are being bless with a four lane highway and these people are robbing us of our future benefits. Something needs to be done soon.

I was pulled over for a supposed tint violation on 5/26/2014. Too bad for the "officer" that his eyes are bad. My tint is legal in Florida where my car is registered. If you do have tint on your car windows, keep them rolled down and simply do 43 mph through this craphole.

I was caught driving 71 mph across the Lumpkin segment of the highway on a clear day with no traffic. I was summoned to the Lumpkin Municipal Court and fined $238. When I drove by the trooper's vehicle parked on the meridian I instantly noticed my speed and began to slow down. He flipped on his lights and chased me to the nearest turn, where I signaled and parked courteously. The officer, A. I. Scott, was one of the rudest policemen I have met in my life. He asked my profession ("What do you do?") and poked fun at the fact that I did not learn to drive until I was 30. His tone was generally snappy and disparaging, and he accused me of gaining speed after seeing him -- presumably to make it appear that I was attempting escape. I surmise that cops do this in an effort to rile you up so that they can press further charges and extort higher fines. This particular officer had a potbelly and a spitting habit (for those who want to identify him more easily). Lumpkin is a small town with a population of just about 2,500 -- mostly black -- left over from the slave trade era. It is named for Wilson Lumpkin, who supported Native American removal, and served as a trading site near a cotton plantation where slaves labored under the rule of whites. About 25% of its citizens now live below the poverty line. The fines charged on Martha Berry Highway are possibly just a scheme to raise money for a town that cannot fend for itself. If the officers of Lumpkin wanted a charitable donation, maybe they should have asked. Pulling me over and insulting my intelligence doesn't do much to foster my benevolent spirit.

Well, add me to the list. Went through here Feb '19. Apparently it used to be much worse here, the speed limits have been increased over the years. But make no mistake, they're still up to their dirty tricks. Early morning, no one on the road, the speed limit was 65 for miles. Hardly noticed it when I came upon a stretch of 27 that said "Lumpkin". As others have pointed out there is no civilization on the highway itself, nothing that would give you reason to think the speed limit decreased, so if you don't notice the sign you're pretty much screwed. I was bopping along doing 73 when the speed limit switched to 60. And yep, here comes Barney Fife to write me a ticket. Granted, I was speeding, but this is definitely nothing more than a revenue maker for Lumpkin, preying on unsuspecting out of town drivers who don't know any better. With fees the ticket was just over $250. So, if you're driving through southern Georgia beware of Lumpkin. You won't actually see the town, just the local police sitting there on the highway waiting to nail you.
