US Highway 276 near US Highway 23/74

Waynesville, North CarolinaMay 07, 20072 Comments

When exiting Hiway US 23-74 onto hiway US 276 north, the speed limit drops from 60mph to 35mph for only a few hundred yards. The speed limit on US 276 is 50 mph after the short section of 35mph. Waynesville police like to sit in this short section and issue tickets, especially to tourists who are unaware of the abrupt speed limit change.

Comments:
When you exit a limited access highway onto surface streets, the speed limit usually *does* drop! The speed limit on US276 at US 23-74 is reasonable and consistent with others in the area. It is true that, when headed north on US 276, after a few hundred yards, the speed limit does increase to 50 mph, due to the less commercial and less densely developed nature of the area. Where one should be careful is approaching this area from the north, where the speed limit drops from 50 to 35. Police officers often run radar in this area. However, the speed limit clearly posted, so it's hard to call this much of a "trap". Pay attention to the signs, and you won't have any trouble!

Highway 276 in the area of 23/74 drops in the speed limit when coming into the city limits and a densely populated commercial area. It does NOT drop for only a couple of hundred yards. It remains at 35 MPH the entire distance through town until you get out of the populted area heading east into a less populated farming area. In fact, Hwy. 276 becomes Main Street right through the middle of downtown Waynesville. This is definitely NOT a speed trap.......you can't expect to drive 55 or 60 through the middle of town with pedestrians and shoppers.
