US Highway 290 near State Highway 95

Elgin, TexasOct 13, 20061 Comments

I drove from SH 95 westbound onto 290 on a clear night. There was no other traffic. About the time that I passed under the railroad trestle, I noticed a car zooming up behind me, and the next thing you know, I got the blue light special. The cop claimed that I was going considerably faster than what I remember going, and I had been watching it that evening. He said the speed limit through the entire city was 50MPH, though the next sign I saw said 60, which was also inside the city. Be that as it may, the highway is on the very edge of town, and is 70MPH elsewhere.

There were two or three other patrol cars all within a half mile, so I’m sure that stretch of road makes them a lot of money. Don’t let it happen to you!

Comments:
First of all the speed limit in this area is NOT 70mph. The 70mph zone does not begin until you are east of McDade, TX on US 290, and then it's only daytime 70 / night 65. The highway runs right through the middle of Elgin with businesses, traffic, and residences on both sides. The speed limit does go up to 60mph as your leaving, westbound, once you leave the business district. My recommendation is that you pay more attention and maybe use your cruise control.
