US Highway 460 near Mile Marker 5

Blacksburg, VirginiaJul 10, 20061 Comments

I’ve only seen it once (because once was all it took for them to catch me), but late at night, on the RIGHT side of the road (instead of the center median), immediately after the street lights are discontinued on the way out of Blacksburg (from VA Tech) on Rt. 460, going towards I-81, a cruiser sits in the dark, with all his lights off, just as the road goes into a downhill, so he can catch you speeding on the 55 MPH downhill. You stay classy, officer.

Comments:
This comment is outdated; US 460 bypass is finally posted 65 mph from Tom's Creek Rd. south to the speed trap just after the I-81 southbound exit (where the speed limit drops suddenly from 65 to 45 and CPD hides a car to go after out-of-towners and students) except for the nominal stretch of 55 mph space right before the Southgate Rd. stoplight (which is far too small for even the most zealous bear to pop someone for not hitting the breaks to travel through a green light). Ever since then, traffic enforcement on the 460 bypass has all but vanished! I presume anyone who was ticketed for going 64 MPH or less between the building of the bypass and the sane (by VA standards) speed limit going up got a refund and clean DMV record. Those officers are as classy as ever, but they have moved on to more lucrative spots. The only car I've seen pulled over on 460 since the limit went up was a rice rocket that passed me going >95 mph. All of the local PDs have rearward facing radar, or just know a good target when they see one; anyone using 460 as a racetrack gets what they deserve. That said, be very, very, very careful if you ever have to go north on I-81; there's no way to do it without running through an exceptionally sleazy speed trap.
