US Highway 51 near West Washington Street

Maroa, IllinoisMay 24, 20071 Comments

The Maroa Police car patrols the RT 51 bypass that runs on the West side of town. The town incorporated the bypass for the specific reason of getting the revenue generated by tickets, where before it belonged to the state. The limit is 55 MPH and no leniency is given.

Comments:
Contrary to what has been posted here, the reason the section of Rt.51 was annexed was due to residential expansion, not to generate speeding tickets. Officers patrol this stretch of road, as they patrol the rest of the city, and do write traffic tickets to speeders, but most tickets are for 70mph or higher, which is over the state-mandated 65 mph on non-interstate roads in Illinois. This might qualify as a "speed trap" if tickets were written for 5 mph over, but to give you up to 15 mph over before writing does not make this a speed trap.
