US Highway 63 near Exit Number 175

Denver, IowaAug 06, 20061 Comments

10 minutes north of Waterloo, Iowa at Exit 175 for the eye-blink town of Denver, Iowa is a highly patrolled, low visibility long curve with perfect conditions for high numbers of tickets from either northbound or southbound traffic to or from Minnesota via northeast Iowa. Although there is nearly no reason for this unusual level of vigilance (the highway is barely in the city limits), it is obviously a very high source of revenue for this village. It’s particularly irksome for southbounders who have just left a long stretch of single-lane boredom, and tend to stretch it it out a little. The curve makes it particularly difficult to see the patrol car, and it it’s toward the end of the day, and especially if it’s a weekend, it’s about a guarantee you’re gonna be checked. I wouldn’t risk 70 here, but 65 is legal. As far as legal enforcement goes, it’s about as continuous as I’ve seen. The one unorthodox frontage road entrance is another stupid Iowa DOT entry at a curve, and only the insane or elderly locals would think of crossing at the frontage road, but they do, & some of them get creamed there, as they try to beat oncoming traffic at highway speeds just to save 2 seconds of their lives. Rememer it: Denver, Iowa-they patrol it for the money, not your safety.

Comments:
The Iowa Speed traps perhaps should have been listed by County. While many of the smaller towns appear to monetize the higher speed bypasses around their edge, many of the Iowa speed traps tend to be staffed by the county sheriffs patrolling the more remote two lane sections of road. For example, rural Hwy 63 North of Denver is patrolled heavily by Bremer County deputies from the intersection of Hwy 3, north to the Chickasaw County line. Chickasaw County enforcement, on the other hand, doesn't seem active on this road, but they seem to seek out speeders on the four lane Hwy 218 near Nashua, which is barely within the county jurisdiction.
