US Highway 70 near Del Rey/Roadrunner Exit

Las Cruces, New MexicoJul 16, 20061 Comments

Motorcyle officer(s) will park in the breakdown lane on the Westbound side of the highway about 1/2 mile west of the Del Rey/Roadrunner exit. The posted speed limit is 45 mph, with the sign about 1/4 mi east of the Del Rey exit. The highway goes over a rise at the Roadrunner Pkwy overpass, masking the officer’s position. The officer will measure the speed of vehicles as the clear the rise. Typical traffic speeds are 55-60 mph. It is easy to find yourself "speeding" down the grade. Most vehicles will need to apply the brake to keep from exceeding 45 mph.

Comments:
I've seen them here before, going back to last year when I, a sophomore at New Mexico State University's Doña Ana Community College, had to commute to the East Mesa campus for one of my classes. Again, coming from the Northeast, a place where people generally go at least 10 to 15 miles an hour over the speed limit, especially on freeways and/or parkways and other limited access highways, I find the speed limit on this stretch to be absurd in both directions! Why do they need that forty-five mile an hour speed limit going almost 2 miles back (1.5 miles this time I clocked the distance from where it turns forty-five, to the Interstate 25 freeway)? Is it because of the fact that this area as many retired people? Or, is it because the three law-enforcement Gestapo agencies here in idiotville are desperate to make money, as is the case in many southern states like Florida? That, I'm not sure.
