US Highway 79 near Cottonwood Road
I entered Jewett on US 79 on a quiet Sunday afternoon. The speed limit on US 79 is normally 70 mph, but drops to 55 when you enter a wide spot in the road that is Jewett. I saw an approaching car flash its lights, a signal that a speed trap was ahead, but before I could even slow down, a city officer pulled out of the grass with and charged me with going 68 mph in a 55 mph zone. It didn’t seem to me that there was an possibility of slowing from 70 to 55 in the space allotted — which is my definition of a speed trap. A $190 fine was assessed for the violation.
