US Highway 82 near Chevron headed east and a rest area headed west

Maplesville, AlabamaApr 19, 20041 Comments

Local Maplesville P.D. sit at the Chevron and at a spot across the highway from the Chevron looking for people going 1 M.P.H. over 55M.P.H. I always start slowing down right before a hill or at the rest stop if I’m coming from the other way. They don’t mess around and usually the Narcotics Unit is out and they like to make money for their town and Chilton Co.

I've lived around Maplesville for nearly 60 years. It's a very small town and I know or have know all of the mayors and police chiefs for a long time. There could possibly have been a guy some 15 years ago who might have done such as this but that is all. It certainly has not been the case for at least the last 10 years. The area in question is a very steep section of Hwy 82 and cars will really pick up speed going down the steep, mile long highway. There are several roads which intersect in this area, plus a busy intersection, retail & commercial businesses plus a cemetery. It is a ripe location for accidents if one's speed is not carefully monitored. The town tries to keep a police present to enhance safety but the officers on duty are not given encouragement to stop anyone going 1 mph over the speed limit. That simply is not true.
