US Highway 87

Carlsbad, TexasSep 17, 20091 Comments

On this major route through west Texas, passing through a number of small towns where speed limits are not affected, for a mile and a half, the speed suddenly drops from 70 to 60. State Highway patrolmen are stationed to catch violators. There is a state school located just off this highway and is used as the excuse for the 10 mph drop in speed, though there are no school buses- and certainly were not on the Labor Day holiday that I received my ticket.

Comments:
The school you mentioned in your comment is not a school per say. It houses close to 300 mentally handicapped people. And they are not all low functioning as t.v. might have portrayed. The reason for the drop in the speed limit is that the handicapped folks will sometimes breach security and get out on the highway. And unfrotunately there have been fatalities. So I thank the folks who patrol our highway in order to keep these people safe.!
