US Highway Route 50 near Hall Road

It’s a MD Trooper trap, in the median and focuses on Westbound traffic. During the summer months they do also work on traffic going east towards Ocean City and will also move up and down the road to the other crossroads. With my radar detector I’m unable to get blips from X, K, Ka or Laser bands, this leads me to believe they might be using POP radar which emits roughly a .43 milisecond shot that is undetectable on some older radar detectors. They utilize the trees, and sometimes will put the hood of their vehicle up to avoid the standard police car silhouette. As basic reference to the trap, if your traveling on Rt 90, it will be right after you get onto Rt 50W…there is a bend to the left and they’ll be at the first crossroad. If your traveling on Rt 50W, you will see the traffic merge on from Rt 90W, then the bend, then the police. Speed limit is 55 mph, but most traffic when out of the speed trap area will travel from 55-65. Though I must warn that you should treat every crossroad in the Rt50 Ocean City to Salisbury run with the possibility that there will be a trap.

If caught.. (not referring to the Cont. to Acct)
56-65mph: $80.00 1 Pt
66-75mph: $90.00 2 Pts
76-85mph: $160.00 2 Pts
86-95mph: $290.00 5 Pts
96+mph: $530.00 5 Pts
If your really booking it, you should also expect Reckless and Negligent driving these tickets carry a $510.00 6 Pt fine, and a $140.00 1 Pt fine, respectively.

For those in the MD Enforcement community, this is 21-801.1, 21-901.1a and 21-901.1b available in the DC/CR 90 from 10/2006 on pages 44 and 45.

Comments:
Definitely a speed trap. I received a ticket here in late May 2012 going west-bound; I had just gotten off of 90 heading back to SU from the beach. They hide their cars and themselves neatly behind the bushes/trees and use what the officer who pulled me over described as "similar to a laser gun" to determine speed; I think the original poster is correct in that they use a pop gun. They do not stay in the car, but clock people while standing hidden behind a bush and then flag down speeders to pull over. There were two cops clocking people the day I was pulled over, but recently, my boyfriend and I saw a similar set up at a location further down eastbound Route 50 with five or six cops pulling people over. (Luckily, I managed to notice people (the cops) sauntering across 50 like there weren't any cars around and cars subsequently pulling over far enough back in order for my boyfriend to slow down.)
