US Highway US77 near Junction with 77W Crossing

Raymondville, TexasJan 17, 20063 Comments

About 3 miles north of Raymondville on US 77, in vicinity of Junction with 77W (Business Route 77). They could be a few miles north as well. Seems to be mainly in North-bound direction.

Very creepy, seemed to me like it could be some sort of shakedown / vehicle confiscation scam.

Posted limit is 70 mph. I was doing about 73 when I saw a State Patrol car pull out ahead of me to intercept me. I slowed down to 65 right away. He cruised along side me for about a minute. I was sweating it out, and trying to not do anything wrong. I was narrowly saved, when the pickup ahead of me apparently thought the cop was gone, and sped back up. The cop was right on his tail in a few seconds.

A couple miles down the road (northbound) the pickup was pulled over, along with several other cars and 4 state patrol cars. They were searching all the vehicles they had pulled off.

A few miles further north, I saw another cop searching yet another car.

I had also seen them there on my way southbound a few days earlier, so this appears to be a fairly regular thing. It may be connected with searching for illegal aliens or smuggling. But once they have you pulled over, who knows what could happen?

This, and the situation at Driscoll, may make it worthwhile to entirely avoid US 77 between Harlingen and Corpus Christi. US281 might be a possible bypass, but the situation there might be the same, I dont personally know. There arent many farm-to-market roads in the area that bypass this section. (Which may be why they are set up here.) Driving a back road that is too isolated might also attract their attention, or that of the border patrol. So all I can say is: go well UNDER the limit here and watch what youre doing. But they still could probably do the old you were weaving ploy if they decide you look interesting enough.

Comments:
these comments above are true. between coombs, texas and corpus christi exchange is brutal. every little town (rivera, driscoll sarita all have sheriffs to patrol that area heavily. so just because its the wide open spaces DON'T SET SAIL. plus you have a bunch of state troopers there also. if you are a "spring-breaker" look out. and i might add hwy. 100 between hwy. 77 and padre island you're a dead duck. do not go a mile over the speed limit in Los Fresnos. its the number one speed trap in texas (info from parade magazine). residend tell cops who work there WRITE EM UP. cuz if you don't will get a cop who will!!! they deny it........but.......the truth is: the homeowners there want to keep their property taxes lov. believe me.........

The area leaving Raymondville to Corpus Christi is a speed trap and the worst thing about it is that 99% of the stops are illegal. I for one being an ex-law enforcement officer for over 30 years have wittness these so call stops. It's what we call a fishing trip. They don't have any real reason for the stop so they go fishing for an excuse to stop you. No probable cause, just cause you look suspicious. They are good at this and most of the stops are boggus. I'm talking about the (DPS) Department of Public Safety.

You don't have to speed to get pulled over there. My husband & I were hauling a 16 ft trailer and they pulled us over to search what was on it. 2.5 hours on the side of the road in the heat of summer. Fun Then we were back on the road and they gave us back our gun and bullets. We do understand what they were looking for and knowing how much drugs or illegals are smuggled through the area I figure an evil necessity.
