US Hwy 17 / SC 21

Yemassee, South CarolinaApr 04, 20134 Comments

Yemassee SC town police are patrolling with radar 4 miles outside the town’s municipal boundaries. SC Code of Laws Section 17-13-40-A prohibits expanded jurisdiction of local police based solely upon exceeding posted speed limits. Of course you must appear in Yemassee municipal court to defend this position. Ticket issued was 4 point violation with a fine of $185. Obviously a small town fleecing of travelers NOT even driving through this town or anywhere near its municipal boundaries!

Comments:
where are they doing that at?

Yemassee annexed a part of Hwy 17 via a small piece of property from the town limits to a proposed development. Even though there are no residents, businesses or any other reason to patrol Hwy 17. they do to write tickets. If you are in the military show up to court in your uniform, they will tear up the ticket.....

I think this is the road. On a Sunday we exited I-95 to go to Hunting Island. I think we were on hwy 17. We saw no reduced speed signs. I was going 55mph. My wife would have told me the limit was 35 mph if she had seen one. The only sign we saw was the one just before the speed trap. I think the fine was $166. This was a number of years ago, but in my opinion someone is corrupt in Yemassee. This road was totally rural and there were few to no houses. They should be arrested and serve jail time. I wonder if they hire criminals to do this?

I added the last comment. I have had only one other speeding ticket in 48 years and that was doing 67 mph back when the interstate speed limit was 55mph in Kentucky.
