West bound approaching Port Barre

Port Barre, LouisianaMay 14, 20122 Comments

Beyond "speed trap" mentality. Police car in left lane and we were behind him. When traffic moved out from the only red light, he intentionally went extremely slow. After following him in left lane with him continuing to go strangely slow, we moved to the right lane and went around him, still below the 45 mph speed limit. We were ticketed for passing on the right and following too closely! Now when we go through there, we stay in right lane and if a car is in left lane, we will not pass it, no matter how slowly they go. We are also considering alternative routes.

Westbound Hwy. 190 through Port Barre, Louisiana This is definitely a speed trap. There are small warning signs on the back of larger, normal-sized highway signs stating "45 mph 200 feet"...200 feet later you come upon the regular-sized 45 mph signs. I drove through here during the day and just barely saw the first signs and really had to hit my brakes to slow down to 45 by the time I reached the second, larger signs. My son was coming through there in the early morning and did not see the first signs, but saw the second and started immediately slowing, but the police were sitting just beyond the second signs and stopped him for speeding. It seems obvious to me that this is how they make their money and they do not care that the signs are small and hard to see (especially at night), and, from the westbound lanes, you come upon the signs coming out of a curve. I wonder if the placement and size of the warning signs is even legal. Something ought to be done about this place. I will never drive through there again. My family is taking the I-10 from now on.
