Wiehle Avenue near Fairfax County Water Athority — between Reston Parkway and Fairfax County Parkway

Reston, VirginiaJul 06, 20040 Comments

An officer will park at the Fairfax County Water Athority treatment facility on Wiehle between the Reston Parkway and the Fairfax County Parkway. He will stand in the middle of the west-bound lanes (2) and about 100 yards from the apex of a hill obscuring him. The speed limit changes from 45 mph to 35 mph on Wiehle when one crosses the Reston Parkway and this trap exploits the change. In general, a 35 mph limit on this road through fenced residential areas would be appropriate, but because this part of the road boarders the FCWA building, at the very least the west-bound lanes are inappropriately marked, thus allowing the Fairfax County Police Department an easy trap for unsuspecting motorists. Also note that in general, Virginia Police do not perform total enforcement and will only ticket for speeds in excess of 14 mph over the posted limit. This arbitrary doctorine contributes to the danger as not all speeding vehicles will be stopped.
