River Road between Turkey Creek Road and Bald River Falls

Tellico Plains, TennesseeApr 22, 20120 Comments

There is a bad speed trap on River Road. The speed limit is 25mph. A Federal "Law Enforcement" SUV is usually parked on a pull off between Turkey Creek Rd and Bald River Falls. He is there on most weekends. This officer is just waiting to write anyone a ticket that he can. He was not even facing in my direction and said he clocked me doing 10mph more than my speedometer said I was. I was doing 30, he said 40. The federal ticket costed me $125 that I didn’t have to spare. Be very careful on this road. I’ve seen many people get stopped on it. I don’t drive fast and they got me.

This is the beginning of the Cherohala parkway. The speed limit is 40mph and a Fed “law enforcement” SUV is parked facing the East on a turn-out. He is there on most Sundays. It’s easy to take this stretch faster in anticipation of the great twisties ahead. This road has a speed limit of 40 mph from Hwy 68 to the NC line. 58 mph in a 40mph, Federal ticket, equal $125.

The city speed limit is 40 MPH and is reduced upon entering the Cherokee National Forest to 30 MPH for the next 22 miles. There are only two signs with one of them facing one direction 14 miles up from the city, the other just upon entering the Forest. Curves are listed at 35 MPH at points. Before entering North Carolina from Tennessee there is a reduce speed ahead sign . The speed limit for N.C. is 45MPH. That would indicate that Tennessee speeds are in excess of 45 MPH. They are not! These are Federal tickets and are up to $500.The road can be safely and easily traveled in speeds in excess of 55 MPH.The elevation change is from about 2000 feet to around 4600 feet at the top.Bikes are supreme targets since this section of road is part of the famous "Dragon".
