Arlington, Virginia Speed Traps
Lee Highway near Overly Pool
Lee Highway is four lanes at this point as it goes down a big hill on either direction. Speed traps are often set up with two officers going west bound as you start up the hill. They walk into traffic and flag you over. Going east bound they also set up, usually the same officer. He stands behind a telphone pole and catches east bound traffic as they start up the hill, and flags them over. End of the month, and summer is very bad. WATCH OUT!
Shirlington — Arlington Mill Drive
The cops park at the entrance of the shirlington movie theater parking lot and radar down Arlington Mill Drive. They are catching speeders coming from S. Walter Reed Drive and driving toward 395. The speed limit is 30mph and you can easily exceed. Beware in the morning. I have never seen them ticket any other time of day.
Fairfax Drive to I66 Westbound
Police will ride the shoulders, on their motocycles, to park at the end of the on-ramp. They randomly pull drivers over for no apparent reason.
I-66 W Exit onto Glebe Road (Ballston)
This is not really a speed trap so much as it is a trap in general. Cops park their cruisers on both sides of the exit right as you get to the stoplight and they stand out of their cars and just flag down anybody they want to pull over for any type of violation (license plate, sticker, tint, etc) Best bet if you have any violations is to avoid that exit.
North Glebe Road (northbound) about 1/2 mile before Chain Bridge
This is an irritating operation that has been around for years. At this location, Glebe Road is a four lane divided highway. The northbound lanes are straight for at least a half mile and go down hill on a gentle slope. The trap is set just around the curve where Glebe Road turns to the right and is still a divided highway. A sign just before the curve indicates a 25 MPH SPEED LIMIT. (Well beyond the curve, Glebe Road does squeeze to two lanes as it winds down the hill to Chain Bridge.) (This observer uses this road principally on weekends.) The trap was last observed around 5 PM on Saturday 2/23/02, in broad daylight, during good weather and relatively low traffic conditions.
