Emporia, Virginia Speed Traps
US 58 heading East in Emporia heading to Va Beach
This is ridiculous! I was headed home to Va Beach from Raleigh NC around 4pm. I got pulled over for going 70 in a 60mph zone. When the speed limit had literally just changed from 70 to 60. I have never been pulled over in my entire life, not only that but cops were everywhere. He pulled me from in front of me,
“I clocked you at 70”. I was probably still in the 70mph zone! Avoid this city. It’s not worth it.
All along Hwy 58
Just like all the other posters indicate, this is nothing but a shameless speedtrap. I was pulled over for going 11 over the limit. Officer asks me the usual condescending, "where you going so fast?" Told him I was just following the flow of traffic and he scoffs, stating that I was the only one on the road. (???) Quick look out the window and there are at least a dozen other cars driving by. I think he was trying to provoke a fight so that he could rack up my bill.

The trooper sits in the median shielded by trees. When you pass, they clock you on radar. Greenville County makes a very large amount of money on speeding tickets. As of June 2010, it’s $5 for EVERY MPH over the speed limit. PLUS $61 in office fees. So…doing 75 (in the 65 mph area) will set you back a cool $111. I suggest using cruise control, and staying well below 65 mph in this area. Don’t pay for their services with your money.
US 58 10 miles East or West of Emporia VA
The town must fund their government with this. I go this route to Va Beach to visit family and EVERY time, no matter time of day or night, there are usually multiple cars pulled. I feel it is in the running for top 5 speed traps in the country. I have only been nabbed once, about 10 years ago the trooper said he clocked me at 58 mph, and now it’s 55 mph starting 10 miles on either side of town. I don’t think they’ll give any leeway when looking at the radar gun.
I-95 and 58 ten miles around Emporia
I am a county resident of Greensville county, live 7 miles outside of city limits. Only been ticketed once by a trooper out in county. But believe me, it burns me up to see city police and sheriff’s deputies out on 95-instead of patrolling their city or county. Believe me everything you read here, most of time you will find 2 city, 2 county and 2 troopers on north side of Emporia at same time, most of the time. Anywhere in and around Emporia is heavy. I hate to say don’t even stop, but that’s you best course. Sadler oil owns most of gas stations and around interstate gas is 10-15 cents higher than going 1/4 mile off interstate. So motorist are subject to getting screwed all the way around.
