Warwick BLVD, in the Hilton area. (Warwick & Main)

Newport News, VirginiaMar 25, 20030 Comments

When you approach Hilton Village (Warwick Blvd and Main St.), from either direction on Warwick Blvd, during the course of about 1.5 miles, the speed goes from 45, to 35, and then to 25. Many cars go from 45-55, and do not slow down. Make sure you go the posed limit, because if you are seen speeding in the 35 zone by an officer, chances are very good that the officer will silently follow you into hilton, where the speed is 25, and the ticket will be more severe. Despite this, it seems that there is no enforcement during the times of day when it’s needed most, which is when the shipyard lets out. The shipyard drivers are mostly the ones who drive through Hilton doing 45 or 50, yet there never seems to be enforcement during these times of the day. The speedlimit could safely be 35 there, however it was probably set lower to safeguard the 2 or 3 daily visitors to the "historic" area. Very *friendly* (eager to write tickets) officer patrolling in hilton, close to the churches, somtimes by Motorcycle, other times in unmarked crown vick.

On Warwick, between Oyster Point and Menchville Rd. I did a week long ride-along. This officer sits in the grass median a dual antenna RADAR (Front and Rear). Traffic coming from Menchville Rd cannot see the car until your right next to him. The majority of speeding cars were coming from Oyster Point. You have to look real hard to see him. sometimes he parks in the open and other times he sits next to a car size bush. Either place his RADAR will track from either light. The limit is 45, but he wasn’t stopping cars until they exceeded 60. He rangup 8 cars that week in the 80 MPH range, 3 of these led to DUI arrests.

Major divided road, cops sit in area of overpasses, catching you on downhill slope, limit is 35mph could be higher

HWY 636- Richneck Road

Newport News, VirginiaFeb 03, 20030 Comments

This road was recently changed to 25 mph from 35mph. This road is a connector to Ft Eustis Blvd. Heavy travelled. The police cars have many side roads that they sit deep in that you can not see them. Even 5 mph over the speed limit here will get you a ticket.
