Springfield, Virginia Speed Traps
Pohick Road near Intersection of Lorton Station Boulevard
Occassionally a police or two will sit on Pohick Road, just before it hits Lorton Station Blvd. When coming from Rolling Rd, it’s hard to see in distance due to the hill and trees in distance. Police sit there and by the time you see them, it’s too late. Speed limit is 35. In the warm weather they have motorcycles, hence it is even harder to spot the police until it’s too late.
Hunter Village Drive near Old Keene Mill Road
The northern part of Hunter Village is a ~ 0.4 miles long
road going through a park-like setting. Sometimes, and in
particular during morning and evening rush hour, people enter their cars parked at the (posted) pickup place, or walk home along Hunter Village. The road serves the
Daventry community, and also connects two County feeder
roads. The posted speed limit is 25 mph: at this time there
is only one sign at the far northern entrance (off Old Keene
Mill) and one sign about 0.4 miles south, at the other entrance (where many side streets enter Hunter Village).
(More signs are planned, but not yet installed).
Without pedestrians, a safe speed is 40 mph, and in my observation this comes close to the 85 % percentile
you mention. When pedestrians
are present I see many people slow down and cross the
double yellow lines, for safety.
Most enforcement of the speed limit takes place at quiet
times, say late morning or evening, or early afternoon,
and also the weekend.
Springfield Parkway
On the Springfield Parkway (speed limit is 50)going east the road curves sharply in two places. Police like to sit in the brake down lane on the right at the end of the curve. By the time you see them it is too late.
Franconia Road near Japonica Street
Motorcycle cop with handheld device enforcing school-zone speed limit in the morning and afternoon.
Old Keene Mill Road
Just as you leave Springfield Plaza and enter into Old Keene Mill Road toward the intersection, next to the church which has the special school light, a police car will sit there and hide there at night to stalk for speeders. They will have headlights on and behind trees.
