Bridge drops from 55 to 45

Gauley Bridge, West VirginiaJan 04, 20133 Comments

I am from Houston and was driving to see Hawk’s Nest with some friends and a cop was waiting right where a bridge drops suddenly to 45. He didn’t care that I didn’t know the area and actually was extremely rude and said I needed better glasses. I hate these small towns and it will be the last time I ever go through there. I talked to my family who live in WV and they told me that is a huge speed trap area.

And they are busted!!!!

According to an article in the Charleston Gazette. The Gauley Bridge PD is under investigation by the West Virginia State Police! This town of under 700 people has the honor of writing the most speeding tickets of any town in WV 6000 in one year. True Abuse of power. Glad to see them get hit back by a higher authority! Hopefully charges are filed and the crooked cops go to jail!

Entire Town

The town of Gauey Bridge, WV is a beautiful, but tourist Un-friendly town. The posted speed limit in town is 25, and you had better not go over at all. They will not give you a warning, and there are rumors of impropriety by the police force. Also, there have been race-related issues with police officers of nearby towns, so travel through this area at all is hazardous unless you are a local, and not very much better even then.

U.S. Route 60 Eastbound

If you are traveling East on U.S. Route 60 you will be on a short stretch of highway which is 4 lane just west of the city. There is a state police detachment on your left and the four lane becomes 2 lane at the intersection of Route 39 and U.S. Route 60. If you stay on U.S. Route 60 and cross the bridge across Gauley river, make sure you are at 45mph before you cross that bridge because there is a big wide area at the end of the bridge on your right and the Gauley bridge city cop is there every morning unless he is up the road with a capture.

I don’t know this officer but he must be real popular because he gets a lot of company while he sits there. Walk up pedestrians, state police, and numerous private vehicles. I haven’t really been able to put my finger on the mystery but for a couple years I’ve thought maybe he was also the judge and held court in his car at the described location.

Intersection of Route 39 and US Route 60

The entire town is a speed trap. However, if your origin is Charleston and your destination is Summersville, WV or the opposite, you can make better time by traveling I-79 north out of Charleston to exit 57 and taking US 19 south to Summersville. It is more miles but the 70mph speed limit more than makes up the mileage difference. The real plus is that you will avoid several local and county speed traps: the Gauley Bridge speed trap, the state police have been heavily patroling the unincorporated areas of US 60 in Fayette and Kanawha counties with radar, the Smithers speed trap, the Montgomery speed trap, the Glasco speed trap, the Cedar Grove speed trap and even after you pass the Chelyan bridge that section of US60 all the way to Charleston is 4 lane with speed limit of 55 with very heavy state police presence. Interstate is the only way to go between these locations.
