Harpers Ferry, West Virginia Speed Traps

Just past the Shenandoah River Bridge on Rte 340 West in Harpers Ferry WV, there are often speed traps going up that hill – sometimes near the Comfort Inn, sometimes at the cemetery. The speed limit is 45, which isn’t unreasonable due to cross streets. They seem to get more people going west (uphill) than east. Going west (uphill), the speed limit is 45 for a few miles before the speed trap. Going east (downhill) the speed limit changes from 60 to 45 just a short way before the speed trap.

Speed limit is 25- and is strictly enforced by the US Park Police (usually driving white Chevy Suburbans). It’s easy to exceed the speed limit in this area- especially in the straightaways. My girlfriend got out of a ticket when she pointed out a bus (operated by the Park Service) to the officer that was travelling at approximately the same speed for which we were pulled over. Be careful in this area- the officer is overzealous, and he has an attitude.
