Coming into Shell Lake from the North -Hwy 63

Shell Lake, WisconsinMay 27, 20120 Comments

You will notice to ‘new’ type of speed sign. A bit hard to read. (is this on purpose?) Smaller numbers inside a Yellow triangle on Hwy 63 coming in on from the North as you enter the city limits as the road curves.
You will notice that this town as well as Spooner change their ‘speed’ signs.
I have noticed this over a period of years….. 25 is now 35, then the one that was 35 is now 25. Or posted in a way it is hard to see OR read. Very Deceptive.

State Highway 63 near County Trunk B

The highway goes through and the speed goes from 55 to 45 for only two blocks and then back up to 55. They nail you in the two block 45 MPH Section. Nine out of ten times you don’t even slow down as you can’t see the signs and follow the other traffic flow. They are so hard up for tickets that they write them out in advance and just fill in your info.

County Trunk D near State Highway 63

At the intersection of County road D and state highway 63, there are reduced speed signs and new MPH signs are posted on the inside of a right hand curve, making them easy to miss. The speed is dropped from 55mph to 35mph, and it is not in a residential area. The next two towns Cumberland and Comstock reduce speed from 55 to 45, not 35. The police sit back on a side street and monitor your speed immediately after the 35mph sign and just before you turn onto highway 63.
It seems pretty much like a speed trap to me: placement of signs out of normal line of sight, nearness to town exit (county D is southern boundary of town), coincidental parking and monitoring by police.

The Regional jail is located in Shell Lake so state troopers and local law enforment are routinely in the area. Stay within 5 MPH of the speed limit of you will be pulled over.
