Tomah, Wisconsin Speed Traps

A bad place is the Tomah split where I-90 splits off from I-94 headed west. He sits in the median late at night and uses laser. Beep goes your detector and flash go the lights… you’re busted. And it is an expensive ticket especially when the highway is clear of traffic late at night. The state has no mercy.

County Highway ET (also named E. Veterans St), runs East from US 12 in the city of Tomah, WI. For a one mile stretch, the highway runs through a Department of Veterans Affairs medical center. The speed limit through this stretch is 30 MPH. The Department of Veterans Affairs Police patrol this small section of the highway, along with the rest of the medical center. They typically write tickets for violations noted by radar or by pacing for violations 10 MPH or more over the speed limit. The biggest problem with tickets issued here is that they are Federal tickets. To contest the tickets, a motorist must appear in Federal Magistrate’s Court, in Madison, 2 hours away. Most motorists just simply plead guilty to the tickets, even though they may believe they were not exceeding the posted limit by more than 10 MPH, in order to avoid losing an entire day travelling to and from court to appeal the ticket.
