Florala, Alabama Speed Traps
2 officers patrol 331 in Florala. One on North end one on South. Speed limits hardly visible if at all. I didn’t have the slightest clue I was speeding. Road looked to be a 50-55 mph hwy zone. Obviously not. Officer was sitting in parking lot with no lights on at all at 2am. Said he clocked me doing 52 in a 35. Beach traffic beware. That’s how they make their money forsure. Passed 2nd officer parked on the side of the road in grass maybe 2 miles later no lights on either.
They were on the outskirts of the town in both directions on 331. Working at night, before you could be aware you were nearing the town. There were no posted town signs or speed limit signs. The officer was so eager, that he hit his lights before I had even past him. He was in competition with the officer posted on the south side of town that I past on my way out of town. He said I was going 60 in a 45 zone. cost me $173 to help them fund their budget. The date was over the Memorial Day weekend, 5-27-14.
I travel through Florala several times a month on my way, to and from the Beachs of South Walton. Almost everytime, the police are set up at each end of town where the speed limit drops from 55 mph. They usually have someone pulled over. Hwy 331 is a major route for people going to the beach for vacation.
The local police officer usually is in an unmarked car (usually a souped up Mustang) setting on the shoulder. It looks like you are going through the country on a normally 55-60 mile per hour speed limit. If pulled over you will be informed that you are within the city or township limits and the speed limit is 45 miles per hour. I have never seen the 45 mile per hour speed limit posted. Word of advice…Do NOT tell him you found a speed trap…He tends to get very defensive and confrontational.
Speed limit changes abruptly from 45 to 35. They are there, hidden
down a side street.
