State Highway 10 / Cantrell Road near Dillard’s HQ

Little Rock, ArkansasMay 10, 20050 Comments

This location is just east of the Cantrell Road viaduct in the area of Dillard’s corporate headquarters and the Stephen’s Episcopal School. The speed limit is a reasonable 40 MPH coming off of the viaduct, but drops to 35 as Cantrell turns to La Harpe.

There are actually two traps here. The common daytime trap includes a radar on Branch Drive a quarter mile to the west with motorcycles at the base of the viaduct. Sometimes the radar is all the way at the private parking lot across the street from Harvest Foods! This speedtrap is almost exclusively for west-to-east travel.

The other trap is a little more traditional, and I’ve only seen it later in the evening. It’s a car or motorcycle behind the billboard on the hill, just past where the 40 MPH limit falls to 35 MPH.

North Hills Boulevard near West McCain Street

North Hills Boulevard is a classic speedtrap. It’s a four-lane divided boulevard with a painfully low 30 mph limit. The flow of traffic is from 35-45, which is more than safe. Police use private drives to keep hidden, and take advantage of neighborhood landscaping to hide their cars or bikes. Please beware of police cars flipping U-turns in front of you to catch a speeder. This almost took me out in Feb 2005. The two popular times for enforcement are in the middle of the day, and from 11:00 pm to 3am. These are the times of day when this stretch of road is least travelled. Local cops refer to North Hills as their "Honey Hole".

McCain Boulevard near Between North Hills Blvd. and JFK

NLRPD will hide on side streets for people to break the posted 30 mph. This is one of NLR’s famous "No Tolerance" zones, so even 31 will get you a ticket.

Mablevale Pike Street near Chicot Street

Little Rock, ArkansasAug 14, 20040 Comments

LR Police sit in parking lot of Church of Christ. The posted speed is 30 mph (and is posted one time near the Chicot Road intersection).
The posted speed should realistically be 50mph (which it is on a nearby stretch of Baseline to Stagecoach). It is virtually impossible to go 30mph or below on this street. It is an old road and has been a trap (easy prey) for many years.
