State Highway 9 near Mile Marker 86

Breckenridge, ColoradoApr 17, 20050 Comments

Driving north bound on Hwy 9, heading toward the south end of the town of Breckenridge (the less used way into town for tourist coming FROM the Alma speed trap area), the speed limit drops from 50 to 35 without any warning, change in road conditions, change is congestion, or anything else. You are about 600 yards from the area of town were slow speeds should be required. Anyway, right after the sudden drop to 35 there is a curve in the road, and as you come around the curve, there is sometimes a Breckenridge cop sitting on the opposite side of the road, down about 250 yards or so. They will do a u-turn and pull you over. They will claim they clocked you, but refused to show radar (at least for me). I have known of others that have been pulled over for the exact same thing, in the exact same spot.

If you come into town on the north side (heading south, the way most tourist come from I-70), there is plenty of speed limit signs to slow you down, going in 10 mile increments. But not so on the south side of town. Just a drastic drop, and then a cop waiting for you. Watch out!
