Gainesville, Florida Speed Traps
SW 23rd Street near Williston Rd and 35th St Crossing
FHP usually park on the sidewalk across from Countryside apartments. Usually during afternoon til evening but sometimes in the mornings. They usually target those heading towards Williston Rd (south).
Interstate 75 near Mile Marker 374 to 379
State troopers hide in the woods and behind bridge supports. They are there every day. The speed limit is 70 but the prevailing speed is 80. Three lanes, straight, wide open. Many many tickets given daily!
SW 35th Road near The Kangaroo on 34th
This trap is located on sw 35th place, which runs along the entrance to Gainesville Place apartments. The trap itself is closer to 34th street and usually targets people heading west on 35th. There is usually a cop parked behind a dumpster at at a house designed for handicapped people (there are 4 handicapped parking spaces for this residence alone). There are usually 2 other cops or even more. The speed limit is 35 mph I believe.
39th Street between the Unicorn Tree Farm and Church to SFCC.
I have seen cops a lot on 39th near SFCC looking for speeders. Most of the time Motorcycle cops. Sheriff, GPD and Highway Patrol.
Interstate I-75 near Payne’s Prairie
Be very careful approaching the south side of the prairie from either direction, but especially from the south. They have you trapped like a rat because there are no exits for 2 miles until you are all the way across the prairie. They enforce heavily around the beginning/end of college semester (University of Florida is just three miles from there) and during holiday seasons like Christmas, Thanksgiving, 4th of July, and Spring Break. They hide in the trees in the median, but also on the right hand side. Best policy is to go five under the speed limit until you are past that area. This is a pretty well-known trap to locals, but even truckers will slow down. Always watch what the truckers are doing. They usually have radar detectors.
