Elizabeth, Illinois Speed Traps
East of town
going eastward, it turns to two eastbound lanes with 55 mph posted. Maybe this is paranoid but I drove through town at 30 mph speed limit behind another car. the other car did not accelerate up to the 55mph readily so I started passing–the car sped up forcing me to go over speed limit to get past him. Cop busted me and let this other car go. A local? If you have had this experience also, post it! this town is a speed trap.
Over the hill of Terrapin Ridge
Heading west towards Galena, coming off of Terrapin ridge there is a huge house, use to be a bed and breakfast, on your right hand side on top of a hill. The county cops like to sit on the other end of the driveway hidden behind a tree. This way if you are heading west bound, you can’t see them, but they can see you.

The trap is east of Elizabeth where the town has relocated (illegally?) its city limits sign and placed a 30-mph sign before the village is even visible. The trap is at the bottom of the hillwest of Terrapin Ridge. The village of Elizabeth issued more that 500 speeding tickets during 2005. Truck drivers and most local people seem to be exempt from this fundraising activity. The speed trap has generated enough revenue to purchase a third squad car. The population of Elizabeth is about 700.
