US Highway 54 near US Highway 54

Carrizozo, New MexicoOct 29, 20070 Comments

Between Carrizozo and Vaughn NM. This stretch must be a revenue generator for the state. Was pulled over in a 38 Foot motor home after following an officer for about 10 miles for doing 60 in a 55 zone! Claimed I had caught up with him so must have been speeding! Very thin excuses, particularly looking for out of state plates, since they know you are unlikely to apppear. Heavily patrolled! I now avoid this route and us US 60 to I 25 to Deming to avoid the communities along US 54.

State Highway 54 leaving Carrizozo towards Alamogordo

After making a hard right hand turn, the highway opens up to alot of nothing on either side. The posted limit is 40 mph, but the 55 mph sign is visible. The opposite side of the highway has the speed limit PAINTED ON THE HIGHWAY going into town. Seems they want you to spend money in there town one way or another before leaving.

Coming in from the south on Highway 54

Ridiculous speed reduction as you come into town from the south. First it drops to 45 mph in the middle of the desert, then to 25 when buildings start to appear. I came in late at night, no traffic, and as I rounded the last turn into the "downtown" there was a cop sitting in the dark. This is generally an unfriendly feeling town, with lots of cops lurking and staring, usually at the main intersection, Highway 54 and 380.
