Shore Dr & State Hwy 94

Cornwall, New YorkMay 18, 20090 Comments

Sitting in a white cruiser with neon green decals on doors in the parking lot adjacent to the intersection, Cornwall cops point their K-band radar gun at West-bound traffic coming down from a gentle incline on Route 94.

State Route 94 near Shady Lane

Cornwall, New YorkJul 30, 20080 Comments

This Cornwall cop must have been sweating his monthly quota (today is July 30th, 2008). He was hiding about 20 feet away from WB Rt. 94 on a lawn on a private property, just past Shady Lane, with his cruiser’s nose pointing at the EB traffic. Even my V1 did not alert, as I believe he shot at individual cars as they approached.

I only saw him just in time because I caught the glinting reflection off of the green decals on the side of his cruiser. I braked before passing him and used E-brake after passing. My V1 had a 2-second full blast, as he shot at me from behind. Then it went silent. It did not sound like POP, more like a conventional K with instant-on feature.

I went back out after dropping off perishable grocery from Hannaford and tried to test out the cop, but he was already gone. Hopefully he lost interest at the spot; not because some pour hapless soul had been caught.

That one was SO close. Gotta use visual, even at night, instead of solely relying on the V1. Lesson learned.

State Route 32 near Enterprise Car Rental

Cornwall, New YorkMay 03, 20080 Comments

Cornwall Town cops sit in the parking lot next to Enterprise Car Rental, point cruiser at NB traffic on Route 32 at around 9:45pm, and use K radar guns. NB has two lanes and traffic tends to move faster in the passing lane. Cops have all lights out on their cruisers, so they are not easy to spot unless your detector goes off and you start to look for and hunt them down. Their position also enables them to monitor SB traffic, but with only one lane and higher limit (55 mph SB vs. 40 mph NB), SB traffic does not appear to be the enforcement target.

State Route 94 near Mt Airy Road

Cornwall, New YorkApr 28, 20080 Comments

Cornwall Town cops sit next to the "Meadowbrook Lodge" sign, where the speed limit drops to 30 mph from 40, and zap rush hour traffic with K band radar guns. The lodge emits X band signals, possibly from automatic doors. One need to take care to differentiate between the two sources so as not to commit either type I or type II errors (false alarms and misses).

Quaker Avenue near Mill Street

Cornwall, New YorkApr 15, 20080 Comments

Cornwall Town cops sit on Mill Street and point their radar guns at oncoming traffic coming down a hill on Quaker Avenue heading to Route 32. Speed limit of only 30 mph is highly unreasonable at these very outskirts of the town. Cornwall also has the worst roads in the area, with a large number of potholes and rough, uneven road surfaces.
