Monroe, New York Speed Traps
W. Mombasha Rd
This is a a very hilly road off of 17 near Tuxedo NY. One portion of this road is 3.5 tenths of a mile downhill strip near the Appalatian Trail. Although the posted limit is 30 MPH at least one "Curve ahead" sign on the road posts the limit at 35 MPH. Typical traffic on this road moves at 40-50 regardless of the posted limit, and that’s around the turns. Going down this one strip, the road slowly curves to the right as you head downhill. About half way down the hill you come around the final curve and immediately get nailed by the trooper sitting behind trees in an alcove at the bottom of the hill, pointed uphill.
This area is typically patrolled every couple of days at the end of the month. If the trooper is parked far enough in the alcove, not faced uphill, it is possible to slow down enough by the time you reach the bottom of the hill by riding your brakes. If the trooper is pointed uphill however, it is nearly impossible due to inertia and gravity, to slow down enough to not get nailed at, at least 40 MPH.
NY 17W
Be careful coming down the SECOND hill after leaving NYS Thruway- marked car sits in center of median-right next to their barracks! They nail incredible numbers of people still used to Thruway speeds. The NYSP Troop that patrols Rt 17 between the Thruway and Liberty,NY,is THE top drug interdiction troop in NYS, especially catching tons of kids making runs to upstate colleges. The stretch betwen the Thruway and Middletown is especially heavily patrolled.
State Rt. 17 Oxford Depot Rd
State Police park under bridge at bottom of long grade. This speed trap is well known to local residents for 30 years but a trap for out-of-state motorists who have just left the NYS Thurway and the 65 mph speed limit. Rt. 17 at this point is the same type of divided highway but with low speed limit. To be future I-89 will become a worse problem. 8 miles north watch foe Goshen Village Police speed trap.
