US Highway 158 near State Highway 168

Once you enter North Carolina on NC168 and travel towards OBX on US158 you will see numerous state and county officers writing tickets. The enforcement here is very aggressive—and don’t go more than 15 over or it is a mandatory court appearance.

State Route 12 near State Route 12

There are several speed traps along NC12, mainly in Avon, and Salvo/Waves/Rodanthe area. Most of the speed limits thru these towns are set too low, probably due to the lack of sidewalks. Vacationers must use the road and its shoulder to walk about. Thru this stretch, the posted speed limit is typically 10 mph under what should be considered a safe speed.

Out of state cars (who are even marginally speeding) seem to be the main targets. I didn’t see any NC cars pulled over in the few days we were there in June 2004. I saw blue lights flashing and an out of state car stopped everytime we went to the store, beach, dinner, and shopping.
