US Highway 158 near State Highway 168

Outer Banks, North CarolinaJan 13, 20072 Comments

Once you enter North Carolina on NC168 and travel towards OBX on US158 you will see numerous state and county officers writing tickets. The enforcement here is very aggressive—and don’t go more than 15 over or it is a mandatory court appearance.

Here is my and my daughter's view about the speed trap in this area. Last Sat., June 13, 2015, we were driving to our destination in Duck, NC. It was around 3:30 in the afternoon so traffic was not bad going in but coming off the island was somewhat busy still. My daughter was driving...she is 43, a responsible person with a very responsible job as a respiratory therapist at a World Renowned hospital. I am 68 years old and we chose her to drive as she is VERY cautious and I have some medical issues. We followed a pick up truck going UNDER the speed limit of 55 MPH for about 10 miles. We could not pass safely because of the steady flow of drivers leaving OBX. Finally, there was a break in the traffic and she sped around the very new looking truck and the maybe 30 yr.old man driving. I could clearly see him as he was going so slow. About a mile past him, the car in front of us, who I never even saw during the passing incident, started flashing lights in the back window. We didn't know who it was for and I even thought of those prank men who do this to women and you should NOT stop. We had no idea it was for us as her only speed, driving clear from Wake Forest, was to pass that unusually slow pick up. No one else was in site, even the pick up disappeared!!!!! So it must be us!!!!! Police officer came up and asked if she knew she was going 72 in a 55 MPH limit and he wanted her license. We were in shock as we knew this was not true. He never even asked for her registration for the rental car!!!!...... Came back to my passenger window in a few minutes and told us she had to be back down here Aug. 20th for a court date or hire an attorney to represent her as she was above the 15 MPH over speed limit ....... We tried to ask questions and he just said get a lawyer and walked back to his car. Now, as the grandma to 4 grandchildren of driving age, I am VERY adamant about speeding. We were NOT going 72 MPH even passing that slow truck. It wasn't necessary!!!!! Yes, maybe she got up to close to 60. Now here is the killer.... put it out there on FB and we saw how many responded with "The same thing happeded to me in that area"!!!!!! Coincidence? I think not. We were told that when you get home from your lovely vacation in OBX, you will be greeted with letters from several attorneys more than willing to help you with your case so you don't have to take off work and fly back down here to tell your side of the story....Ofcourse you will do that! ANYONE SMELL SOMTHING FISHY going on????? I am sick that her long awaited and very much deserved vacation from saving lives is going to cos

I am sick that her long awaited and very much deserved vacation from saving lives is going to cost her more than our condo and car rental and add points to her driving record that is spotless. You all can decide if you think this is a speed trap but in my heart I know it was.
