Airport Access Road near State Route 40

Vandalia, OhioOct 17, 20050 Comments

Right off of interstate 70 or State Route 40 you can hit the Airport Access Road, which leads to the Dayton International Airport.(actually in Vandalia) This is more like a highway than a road, despite it’s name. This is a 4-lane, divided "road" (two lane each direction)This is contantly patroled by Vandaila police. But here’s where things get tricky. This long road (4 mile?) has nothing else around it, no other exits (other than vandalia exit/on-ramp), NOTHING. 2/3 of the road is in vandalia, and 1/3 is in an "island" of Dayton. About a 2 mile radius around the airport is owned by the city of dayton. Completly surrounding it, is the city of Vandalia. The actual city of Dayton is several miles away. So guess what is going on. Both Dayton police, and Vandalia police patrol the entire stretch of the road. But wait, there’s more! There is also the Dayton Airport Police too. They are completely seperate from regular dayton police. Different uniforms, cars etc. But wait there’s more! Add in the Montgomery County Sherrif’s office! There are FOUR different departments of law enforcement on this road. It gets worse! As of Fall, 2005, Dayton airport police have installed live camaras(4) at an intersection right in front of the airport, that they monitor from within the airport! Once in a while you will see TSA(Transportation Security Administration) SUVs driving around. They have operated the security gates and a few other things inside the airport since 9/11. Although I don’t think they can pull you over for traffic violations. (They only have yellow lights on top the the SUVs.)The speed limit on this road drops from 65(Interstate-70) to 55 to 40 to 25, the closer you get to the airport. I would advise going the speed limit at all times. I have seen police at many different times: 4am, noon, and in the evening. They will pull you over for just a few mph over limit. Oh, and they love to get car renters leaving the airport. Leaving the airport terminal there is a 40mph construction sign. Once you leave the construction there is no posted speed limit. It is STILL 40 mph. Most people think it becomes 55 or 65 because of being a 4 lane divided road.
I have picked up Ka, X and laser. Not sure if camaras are tied in to any computer software of not.
I used to work for one of the airlines, and now I travel through there about once a week on business.
I know this was long, But I hope it helps anyone who travels to the airport.
