A Few Miles East of Uniontown Heading West on U.S. Hwy. 80

Uniontown, AlabamaApr 03, 20108 Comments

I would join a class-action suit against this town if somebody knew how to do it. Get our money back and fire their police force and judges. This place could hardly afford its own police force. My guess is instead of taxes they pay for their town by running a speed scam on out-of -state motorists.

I had just left an inspiring day In Selma honoring MLK and set my cruise control precisely at 65. The speed suddenly and without warning dropped from 65 to 55. There was one sign saying so. The cop lied and claimed there were “3 or 4” such signs but I drove back over the route and there was only the one. My view of that one sign was blocked by an 8-car-carrying trailer racing far faster than I was driving. But I had an out of state plate and was pulled over. $183.00. I appealed to the state AAA ,which referred me to the state attorney general, who said he couldn’t do anything about it.

What I can do about it is avoid Alabama from now on. This town and state are spoiling citizens’ respect for the law.

Comments:
Not only is the speed limit posted so close together that you would have to slam on brakes to attain it but they are racial profiling. I have never seen anything but whites in out of state vehicles stopped. We sat there as "others" more previleged sailed on by. A $ 186.00 speeding ticket is just a bit excessive for 10 mph violation.

In the spring of 2008 I was stopped in the speed trap in Uniontown. Was given the option of paying a ticket or paying $200 and go to a traffic school to keep it off my driving record. Took the 4 hours course, watching safety videos at the designated city building and I was surprised at the number of out- of- state or out of county motorists , especially out-of-state truckers who were in the viewing room. I've seen a litle less activity since they have had a change in administration...as I travel through there en route to Demopolis weekly...but you can still see the white unmarked Ford car within the 55 to 35 mile speed zones coming into town traveling West on Hwy 80. Use your math and just figure how much money somebody in that town is making. What was so strange to me...I had traveled through Uniontown for 5 years while doing business in Demopolis then just like overnight...things started happening and people were being pulled over on a regular basis including myself. After I got my ticket.. one morning..I was own my way to check into the cost of the ticket ( before I learned of the taffic school ) and I was coming into Union Town... slowing down from 65 miles per hour to 55..and was pulled over again. So the police officer and I had a little laugh when I told him I was on my way to pay a ticket... Fortunately, no second ticket. ha1 ha! Spring of 2008

On a Sunday morning at 8:30 a.m. There were two vehicles west bound on 80 just outside of Uniontown, the other two vehicles were the local authorities. We were both pulled over and ticketed. The road was competely empty and my vehicle and the other vehicle was about a mile apart. I called in for the cost on two seperate occasions and was given two seperate costs. Speed trap or just outright dishonesty.....I'll let you determine this.......I was going to spend a little money in the town on breakfast for my family and purchase gasoline....I decided not to after the policemen were very unfriendly while writing me a citation for speeding........the real victims are the business owners in the town.......breakfast and gasoline for my family and the three other vehicles following about ten miles behind me would have been well in access of the fine money ( if I ever get a consensus) that I will be forwarding to this town.....my caravan simply went to the next town to spend our money.

I got a ticket there also, I am white, the cop was sitting just over the rise on the company driveway beside the 55mph sign..I didn't even have time to slow down....183.00... So we went thru there again a few months later and I warned my buddy about it and we spotted the cop coming at us on the fourlane and apparently the cop thought we were speeding again even though I watched him drop it to 55mph and the idiot locked up his breaks to do a U-turn, problem is there were 2 -18 wheelers and a F350 hauling an empty horse trailer right behind him.... when we came back thru there from the casino in Philadelphia there were marks all over the road and blackend pavement, seems he caused a wreck just to try and give another white man a ticket... This can not be stressed enough it is a Major Speed Trap for Uniontown....

I am a white woman and have been pulled over twice in Uniontown. The first time was two summers ago. I was coming through heading west with a load of stuff in my pickup. Didn't even see the sign that drops from 65 to 55, he (black cop) pulled me almost as soon as I passed the sign (I know this after looking on another trip through). This last time I was heading east coming out of the town. It goes for a long while at 55 before changing back to 65. I had my cruise SET on 60. The cop (black guy) did a u-turn and followed me closely (pretty much tail-gated me) for a while before pulling me over. Remember I said I had my cruse set and on at 60 - he said I was doing 70! There's no way!!! I tired to argue but he was very ugly and even approached the car with an attitude when he pulled me over. Hate that place! My court date was yesterday -sent the lawyer!

I passed through Uniontown twice a week for 8 years. It is definitely a speed trap and something should be done. I saw white people pulled over time after time, but didn't see any blacks pulled over. I tried to warn people behind me to slow down. Once a car going west a good distance in from of me was meeting a cop car going east. The cop turned on his lights like he was going to stop him, then when the cars got closer together, the cop turned off his lights and let the car go on. I got closer to the car as we went into town, and when we both stopped in different lanes for a red light, I saw that the driver was black. All the cops that I know of are black. Definitely some racial profiling going on, or at least some "in town" favorites are not being treated as all other drivers are.

I would love to join a class action against this atrocity. I am a black man and I can identify with everything that is written here. My guess was that they are paying salaries for city employees with this unjust money. It is ridiculous!!!

I have been a licensed driver in four different states since 1975 and have driven in 12 different countries during my tenure in the military. In 37 years of driving I have never received a speeding ticket or any other type of moving citation. However, this changed on Wednesday 25 April, 2012 when travelling out of Uniontown AL. on Highway 80 East. A police officer in an unmarked car approached me from the opposite direction and flashed his lights for me to pull over. He issued me a speeding ticket for driving 67 miles per hour in a 55 speed zone. First of all, I wasn’t going 67 miles per hour. Secondly, I never noticed a sign indicating the speed limit as 55. I was actually going somewhere between 62 and 65 miles per hour. Also, he asked me in a condescending way “did I understand what he read or explained to me about contacting the court by phone.” Of course I understood him, but there is no need to try and talk down to people and this was just what he did. I am an ordained deacon in my church and hold an undergraduate and graduate degree in Business and Human Resource Management. Through the years I have learned to observe and evaluate people so when someone is being arrogant it’s really easy to distinguish. Most officers would give out warnings in this particular situation. However, in this town things are quite different. It is apparently obvious this stretch of road is a speed trap. This is based on the amount of negative postings I have read from other of out of state motorists who have received speeding tickets travelling through Uniontown. It is clear their police officers have established a reputation for handing out a large number of speeding tickets on highway 80. Finally, their town’s motto is “a good place to live” but please allow me to say, it is definitely not a good place to be travelling through. If their police officers were really concerned about safety of motorists, their efforts would be focused on warning motorists instead of issuing speeding tickets to generate revenue from out of state motorists. I will pay my speeding fine for this ticket but I also will spread the word about Uniontown and my experience when going through this town.
