US 79 goes through Gibson and the speed limit abruptly drops from 55 mph to 30 mph. The law is waiting. To avoid getting caught, you had better stand on your brakes real quick. $142 for 39 mph in a 30 mph zone. They are out for revenue only. 2 squad cars and the speed zone isn’t a mile long.

Avoid this town if at all possible. For a town of just a few hundred it has very nice brand new patrol cars all the time. ??? They are allways set up not 30ft past the 30mph signs. they give no leeway to anyone. I have stood in line with my wife on there collection days. It is obscene the size of the line. They have a counter set up with debit card friendly machine. Not slack given to anyone even if you were caught without your proof of insurance. That will be added to your fine. I surveyed everyone close to us in line that day, and they all had they exact same speed wrote on there tickets???? This has been going on for the 30 years I have lived here.

Is this a speed trap? Does a bear go in the woods? This town of less than 400 residents has 2 marked and 2 unmarked cars, plus 5 full and part-time officers. Often they work three cars at a time, on car just inside each city limit, and the chief flying back and forth between them at extremely high speeds. A lot of people make the mistake of passing one car going within the 30 mph speed limit, then they speed up and blow out the other side of town doing 55...Not a good idea because there is one over there waiting too! The city derives 70% of it's total general fund budget from fines and forfeitures. They have their own lady judge, their own twice a month city court, and one recent docket had over 500 citations pending!! All that revenue, yet the city is broke and can't repair one washed out street culvert! Go figure! They will nail you for no proof of registration, no proof of insurance, not wearing your seatbelt, window tint violation, and who knows what else!! Someone need to investigate this place!!

Someone please define speed trap. There is no "debit card friendly machine". The speed limit is set by the state, and the town has nothing to do with it. Yes, there are two full time and two part time officers, but I have never seen three working at a time. Yes, sometimes there are two officers working either end of town. Yes, they have their own "lady judge", but every incorporated town in Tennessee with a police force has a monthly city court, with a town judge. Tickets are written for a variety of infractions, which are the laws of Tennessee. If you had insurance, but didn't have your card, the judge will dismiss. The city is not broke, yes there is a culvert washed out, and the city is in the process of dealing with FEMA to repair this damage, which was caused by the flood in the spring of this year. Give all the facts, not just the ones you think will make the city look bad.

I would be pleased to do just that for you. A speed trap is getting a healthy speeding citation for doing 32 in a 30 MPH zone ! Another definiton would be getting another healthy speeding citation the very next morning by the same officer for doing 28 MPH. 28 you say ? Yes, 28. How could that be you ask? Well, let me explain. At 7:30 in the morning thay inforce a 25 MPH " SCHOOL "speed zone even though they have no school. I asked the officer that question and he said "well, school buses still run through here". So, #3 above, you're WRONG ! Speaking of Tennessee State Laws, do you want to discuss the TBI investigation against the Judge's husband a few years back. I can intelligently discuss that with you as I was witness. The Mayor/Judge got fired and convicted. Come to think of it, that might explain 32 in a 30 and the 28 in a 25 huh?

Some time ago, an officer was added to the force there who is NOT speed ticket crazy and does not participate in their speed trap. Naturally now he is catching (DIRTY WORD) from the mayor and the little young chief of police. (Chief who is 24 years of age and a part time officer here in Gibson but he is full time at the county sheriff's dept.) The good officer is one of the good old time "peace officers" who gives people at least 10 MPH OVER the speed limit, and sometimes more. People who are stopped who have a good reason why they were speeding and who tell the truth (after more than 30 years experience he can pretty much tell when one is lying or not.) are let off with a warning. I'll grant that most of the one's out there are in tight in the speed trap, but there is one guy out there, so far, who is not that way. Sure hope he can stay there but it doesn't look good right now for him.

I drive a truck for Wal-Mart and got pulled over back in January 2014 the speed went from 55 to 35 without any warning and there he was waiting on his next victim. I explained to him it was my first time through this town and I was only doing 39 but he still gave me a ticket, most officers would have gave a warning, wait no most officers wouldn't even stop you for 39 in a 35. The thing that bothered me the most was the outrageous fine of $150. They are treating people unfair no doubt. No wonder the population is 400 no one wants to live there.
