Coming in to town from the south heading north

Foley, MissouriJul 04, 20113 Comments

I was driving headed up to Hannibal (mistake… road was closed miles up without warning), I was coming at about 50 MPH into an obvious really small town. About 100 feet ahead I saw a 30 MPH speed limit sign. I looked at my dad and said, "There’s a 30 MPH sign, I’d better do it or I’ll get a ticket for sure in this town. As I passed right along side the sign I glanced at my speedometer and I was doing right on 30 MPH. No cars in sight. All of a sudden about 2 or 3 hundred feet ahead the lights came on. I thought he couldn’t be after me because I was doing 30. Wrong! He said he clocked me at 50. I commented that when I was passing the sign I was doing 30. He said I had warning signs further back. I was not about to argue with him. I knew better. He was in an unmarked car and was not dressed in what I would consider a uniform… it was more like a t-shirt. As he went back with my license to his car, I joked to my dad that if he tickets me I hope he uses the money to buy a uniform. Well, he can buy several uniforms now. He popped me with a $166.50 ticket. It is difficult to maintain respect for law enforcement when you got this type of thievery going on with an authority packing a badge, a gun, and a ticket book. Disgusting!

^This is true. The Foley PD car is unmarked. He drives up and down 79 almost all day looking for speeders. These officers have no uniforms. Just a simple black shirt with POLICE spelled out. 166.50 does not seem rght. For doing 20MPH over the limit it should be about $80. This is another town that has a Police Dept. only for making ticket revenue money.

either that or he sits at the only 4 way stop in town and either gets you for speeding or running the light. I had just passed the light and was almost out of town going to St. Louis when I got hit. Actually took a picture of the 60 mile an hour sign while I was stopped that was about 50 feet away from me. When I asked him when the speed limit starts, I was told once you get passed the sign.

This happened to us too. We were told we were going 51 in a 30 zone, but he said "i saw you were trying to slow down". He gve us a ticket too and it was a whoppng $166.50 also. We tried to slow down, but you're right, that 30mph sign pops up fast. Never received a ticket since late teen years, we're in our 60's, and we've traveled across the USA, doing the speed limit. We will never drive this road again. We thought we would take a ride for our anniversary. Some anniversary present.
