Cottageville SC

Heading down Hwy 17 toward Cottageville a week ago Monday during the early morning I was stopped apparently doing 51 in a 35 mph zone. I’m not much on speeding, was really taken back when the Chief of Police stopped me. Got “reduced” tickets, 1 for speeding, the other for apparently crossing a double line ~~~ which I don’t know what he was talking about because there wasn’t anyone else around to pass!!! He told me the tickets were $1000 with 10 points, he was doing me a favor by reducing them to $450.00; no points! Hey, what a guy!!! Definitely a speed trap! The following morning, while driving through that area I was extremely cautious; left later so it was daylight! Yes, I saw what they were doing. Apparently, it goes from 50 to 35 before entering the city. The sign is set far off on the Right side of the road…. you wouldn’t see it unless you were looking for it over there! There is a wire fence on the right with vines growing all over it; the police sit right behind that fence in a parking lot, facing the same direction you are! There is absolutely no way you are going to see them. Funny thing, both coming & going both days, the police had someone pulled over in the very same place (one of those people, of course, was me)! In addition, I have been trying to pay the ticket on-line for now 10 days. That service is not working. Apparently, they have not entered the ticket yet. I have called the town administration; tried contacting the Policy Department and neither answer the phone! Ridiculous!

The cop did not "help this guy out". He helped himself and Cottageville out. His thought process was not "what can i do to help him out". Speeding ticket fines go to the state of SC. Noise and other violation fines go to Cottageville. They look out for only themselves. If a law is broken, then a cop has every right to issue a ticket. If you are going to enforce a law then ticket them for their offense. The DMV has a points system in place to get bad drivers and repeat offenders off the road. "Helping" the motorist by reducing the ticket is not "protecting the public". As a resident of this beautiful town that has never been pulled over, i would like to see them do more actual policing and less sitting in their car behind a bush or car lot wasting their day away for somebody driving 40 mph

First of all sir you are a liar. Lets take one point at a time. 1. The speed limit in Cottageville goes like this, it is 55mph coming to town, then there is a sign warning you the speed limit is dropping to 45mph, then there is a 45mph sign, then a few hundred yards after that sign the speed limit drops to 35mph. So get your story straight. 2.And yes he did help you out, yes it is true that the money for speeding tickets goes mostly to the state level and those tickets carry points, and get reported to your insurance company. More than likely your insurance rates would have gone up as well. He did help the town out by charging you under a town ordinance, the state still gets some of the money but it is a non-moving violation there are no points and it doesn't go on your record once the fine is paid. 3. Finally, I am a resident of Cottageville. There are no city taxes here, The police officers help this town out greatly and keep it safe for kids to ride their bicycles down the road, skate board, walk the dogs etc.... without having idiots like you hauling tail down the road. I know the Chief of Police personally and he cares more about this town and does more for this town that anyone will ever know. He doesn't get recognition for all the stuff he does for free here, on his own time. All in all, if you come thru Cottageville, do the speed limit. The signs are plainly posted and are the same everywhere in the US. White, Rectangular, with big black numbers on them. Slow down and enjoy the view.

If the citizens pay town taxes , it wouldn't be a need to write tickets.....o wait that's how corruption begin not by writing speeding tickets.... Well since the citizens aren't being protected you say.. I guess when u get robbed call the sheriff department they will show up and hour or so ... I'll take my chance with the police dept....I lived here over 5 years and I love the little town...... U call yourself a citizens, you sound like a traitor.... Good luck and good bye
