Entire Town of Waldo

Waldo, FloridaMar 19, 20106 Comments

Everything is enforced and ticketed. Speed, lane changes without a turn signal, following too close, equipment failures (brake, head, tail lights, etc.) are all fair game for a citation. Even AAA warns of this town. The place makes it’s living as a speed trap. No warnings, no breaks, just a ticket for the max. Avoid at all costs. What these cops don’t see they make up.

Yes, Waldo is a speed trap. I have traveled through the town on 301 many times since 1997. I never received a ticket. As you approach the town form the north or south there are adequate warning signs of the increased enforcement. There are at least 2 signs before each speed drop. I do not want to contribute to the towns operating budget through traffic fines. It is very easy to get through Waldo without getting stopped. Obey the traffic laws. It is not that long of a drive through the town. Going north on 301 is a little tricky at the north end of town. The speed limit goes from 45 to 55 then drops back to 45 before the light at the flee market. Pay attention to the signs and you should be ok.

Waldo is the mother of all speed traps. I only live a few miles outside of Waldo and have to travel through there everyday on Highway 301. They will get you for anything and everything they can.

Here is a true story for you about Waldo, I’m a police officer in New Jersey, Not much of a ticket writer you have to be doing something pretty bad for me to issue a ticket the first time I stop you but you do go into my little black book for future reference. What I’m trying to say is You will get a break from me and hopefully learn from the experience. Any way…. I had a traumatic event happen to my in the line of duty and was taking a break from work to clear my head, I was on my Harley traveling on 301 into Waldo when I was stopped by a female Lt. who told me I was doing 85 in a 45 (hahahaha) I thought that was hilarious seeing I do nothing but the speed limit while I’m on my bike. I’ve seen too many bike accidents in my time. I gave her my paperwork and told her I thought she was mistaken about the speeding. Then I gave her my ID and told her I was on the Job myself. She looked at my ID and said “you must be a dishonest cop if you’re from New Jersey” And proceeded to write me a 260.00 ticket. I heard later from an investigator from FDLE that they were replaced and that I was the talk of the town for about a year….lol! Anyway that’s my true story about Waldo Fl.

Waldo! Definitely a speed trap. I used to have to drive through there a couple of times a month. If I was the only vehicle around, it wasn't uncommon for a cop to harassingly tailgate me all the way through the city. Never got a ticket, though. Waldo is one of only two towns in the ENTIRE USA that is listed as a speed trap by the American Automobile Association. The other is Lawtey, FL about 20 more miles up the road from Waldo.

Even knowing that the entire stretch of 301 between US 10 and Gainesville is one continuous speed trap doesn't really help. One person wrote that what the cops don't see, they make up. This is so true. The speed limit changes very quickly, and from reading this list there are many ways a person - even being careful - can get a (very expensive) speeding ticket. There is another aspect of this that deserves mention. This form of funding town and/or county government does only that - pay the salaries of the town officials, along with police officers. However, looking at the homes and businesses - or lack thereof - as you drive through these areas makes it very clear that none of this money is helping the actual residents of this area. Certainly knowing that the area is notorious for traps does nothing to entice motorists to stop and patronize local businesses, which would support the general population. I n addition to your fines, within 7 days (not even business days) of receiving a ticket in this area, we - out of state, as I imagine most people who get tickets are - received three pieces of mail from traffic schools and law firms. So they sell your name to these people, making even more off your ticket. So sad........
