Eureka Rd & Wayne Rd

When exiting the airport via John Dingell Dr onto Eureka Rd westbound, as you accelerate to merge onto Eureka the 45 MPH speed limit sign is located well after you merge into traffic. However, the speed trap is set up just pass the speed limit sign. By the time you notice the sign it’s too late and you are caught. We had just arrived in Michigan for a vacation and got caught there. The officer even made a comment that we had just rented the car from Budget. After writing our ticket he went back to his spot to wait for his next victim.

Comments:
This is one of the most notorious speed traps in MI. They prey on out-of-towners leaving the airport as well as locals. All are fair game. If you plead not guilty and go for an informal hearing your are intimidated by a visit to the courtroom where another speeder has the book thrown at them then offered an opportunity to pay extra beyond the fine to plead to a non-moving violation. That way the municipality can keep all the money instead of sending most of it to the State. What's amazing is how blatant they are about it. We're trying to interest an attorney or an investigative reporter to take on the issue. What a story - or class action suit - that would be.

I just got a ticket today for doing 57 in a 45....but I had my cruise control on at 45. Told the cop that and he just said I was wrong. Now I know my speedometer is correct because I have compared it against two different GPS. He said those are unreliable...but yet they can get me out of the woods within 1 foot. I am fighting this. Oh yeah I also saw on Channel 7 did a report on this and same thing happen to another woman. THIS IS A TRAP AND THEY LIE!!

I was returning to Ann Arbor from the airport and received a ticket at this location. I have never received a speeding ticket before and I am extremely disturbed and embarrassed by this. I am a very cautious driver and I agree with the previous comment - I see many people speeding, passing in no-passing zones, or driving aggressively, and I want the police to intervene because such driving is dangerous. In my case, I was pulled over right after merging onto Eureka Rd. I had adjusted my speed to merge with the traffic that was present. I didn't notice my speed at that moment since I was concentrating on the existing traffic. I believe that to merge safely, you must match the predominant speed of traffic and to do otherwise would be dangerous. Am I right in thinking the phrase in Michigan law (Act No. 85, Sec 627.(1) might apply here? "A person operating a vehicle on a highway shall operate that vehicle at a careful and prudent speed not greater than nor less than is reasonable and proper, having due regard for traffic, surface, and width of the highway and of any other condition than existing." I explicitly don't agree that after merging, you can continue to travel at a rate faster than the speed limit even if the cars around you are doing so. If I found I was doing so, I would gradually slow down and allow people to pass me. I feel strongly that I was ticketed for driving as safely and prudently as was possible under the conditions at the time. Romulus is using this section of road as a revenue source and in doing so they undermine respect for the police and the court system. I am probably naive, but I want to believe that police officers are motivated to serve their cities and townships in the interest of public safety, and that they must hate being assigned to "speed trap" duty. Based on this state law, public act 85 of 2006, I believe that the the 45 mph speed limit on this section of Eureka Rd. is set artificially too low. On this section of road, a divided highway with far fewer than 30 access points per 1/2 mile, a traffic study is required to set such a low speed limit (45mph). Can anyone tell me if an engineering and traffic study of that part of the road has been conducted, or how to find that information? If such a study does not exist, it is Romulus in violation of state law, not poor victims such as myself.
