Highway 6, Calvert, Texas

Yes, Calvert is a speed trap. Reasonable safety concerns aside, the dead giveaway is the extreme distance between the 55 and the 70 mph signs as you’re leaving town. Another good gauge of a speed trap is when the police are as likely to get you while leaving town as they are coming in. If they’re truly concerned about traffic safety, they’ll stop speeders on the way in… not out. Plus there’s that incredible distance until you get back to the 70 mph limit when there’s nothing out there except open land and pavement. It’s simply a manipulation for taxation through victimization. It also promotes people to drive slow enough to see all those antique stores as you’re passing through. Wonder if anyone actually stops? No matter how you look at it, it has less to do with traffic safety than money. It’s wrong.

Comments:
1. The State of Texas sets the speed limit (Texas Department of Transportation) after doing speed studies in the areas they control (US and State Highways and FM Roads). If you are displeased with the speed limit, complain to TxDOT 2. Do you really believe the State of Texas set up the entire speed limit system through that area to promote your looking at antique shops? Really?
