Jamestown Road, (Route 31)

Williamsburg, VirginiaApr 01, 20011 Comments

The speed limit only two years ago was 55. It has just recently been posted at 35. That’s a drop of 20 MPH and if your caught going the old speed limit of 55 the fine is $100.00 and you are charged with reckless driving. That’s 6 points against your driving record. For something that was legal just a short tome ago. This road also has just been widened, so why was the speed limit reduced? Virginia is in the midst of repealing personal property tax, the car tax. This is a form of revenue-replacement, plain and simple! The trap is located at the top of a blind uphill curve just after passing the lake. (Lake Powell) The officer sits with instant-on radar back in the shadows of a private businesses driveway. At 6:00 AM in the morning it’s still dark and you can’t see him. Coming from the other direction he is covered by a 7 Fort privacy fence which lines the driveway of the private business. An excellent speed trap location. I have traveled to work using this road every day. At least once a week I see someone pulled over by the cop. That’s $$$ in the bank…..and totally wrong!

Comments:
People traveling in the early morning towards jamestown are often trying to catch the ferry. Someone is always about to miss the boat and end up 20 minutes late going to work at the power station in Surry, etc. If there wasn't such heavy enforcement on this stretch, people who were late would risk speeds that are significantly unsafe. In the last 10 years, the speed limit has never been 55, though it has been 45 and it seems as though the speed zones have changed multiple times over the last 7yrs or so. At one time it was even posted 45 going one direction, and 35 in the other over a short stretch. :) The addition of a traffic light at Ironbound and Jamestown rd in 2004 slowed things down, which helped break up the ferry dash also, at a dangerous intersection.
