I was traveling to Dallas from Northwest Arkansas via Oklahoma Hwy 69. It is an annoying highway because the speed limit changes about every 2 to 3 miles it seems.
I was pulled over in Kiowa for going 55 in a 40. I told the officer that I was resetting my cruise control everytime I saw a new speed limit sign and I did not see a 40 MPH sign. He wrote me a ticket for 50 in a 40 (so what was it 50 or 55).
On my way back from Dallas I decided to look for the 40 MPG sign. I turned around and got in the left lane as I was previously, there was a good bit of traffic in the right hand lane – I never saw the sign. So I turned around and looked for it again. didn’t see the sign. The 3rd time, I got in the right hand lane and finally saw the sign. It is about waist tall – I’ve never seen such a short sign. One cannot see it if driving in the left lane with traffic on the right side.
I callled the number on my citation – spoke with the Court Clerk of Kiowa and she told me that Kiowa doesn’t have any control over the height of the signs and tried to get me to call the State and complain. I suggested that perhaps the city of Kiowa should call the State and request taller poles for the sign so that folks from out of town who couldn’t see the sign if driving in the left lane wouldn’t be ticketed. The paperwork that was given to me with my citation, states that payment must be made by the court date or another $200 will be added to your fine – but there is no court date listed on the citation or the additional paperwork! The court clerk was aware of the problem with the short sign that is not visable – yet they continue to write speeding tickets. Speed trap for sure!
