Not so much a speed trap as a stop-sign trap. The cop will wait about 100 feet up on the side street (Sunnyside Ave.), just out of view of drivers coming to the (relatively) new stop-sign by the lake side parking area. Less visible from the west-bound side than from the eastbound.

Lots of drivers tend to take that stop-sign less than seriously, since it’s pretty useless. But it looks like it makes the village a lot of money.

Comments:
Like it or not this is an important stop sign....There is a parking lot across the street so walkers come out of the woods to go to their cars...also, bikers ride this trail non-stop...without the stop sign you couldn't see around the corner to get across the road safely.

This is not a speed trap! This stop sign, along with the other stop signs stretching from the Sawmill Parkway to Broadway were put in after tremendous efforts by the residents who live along that thoroughfare. It is a traffic calming device which requires occasional enforcement to remind drivers that the signs are meant to be there. Often at the request of local residents. Before the stop signs were put in the road was a free-for-all speedway. There was no interruption of speed for the 2-3 miles of that stretch. Cars raced through primarily as a short cut. Indeed, residents fought an effort by NYS DOT to straighten and widen the road as this would have made the issue far worse. Speed bumps were not an alternative because of the snow plows and there is no room for circles. Thus the stop signs. These work reasonably well and, as a resident, I am very pleased that they are there. This particular sign is important not only to slow down cars due to the pedestrian traffic at that specific site, i.e. the parking lot, but also to slow down vehicles who are either about to turn in to a residential neighborhood or, if going straight, are approaching a lot of foot traffic at the top of the hill where students pour in to the street.
