Speed drops from 50 to 35 in a school zone. There is a sign but when you are from out of State looking for road signs, etc. it is easy to miss the sign. Hard to read the hours on the sign (when the speed limit drops to 35). We saw no school buses in 7 days there and only one school was visible from the road. Had the cruise set at 50 so I would not be speeding. No flashing light to draw your attention. Local told us the cops sit there waiting for you. He wrote the ticket for 51 though I had the cruise set at 50. I suspect the extra 1 mph raised the fine and points on license. I am 56 and I have had one other speeding ticket in 40 years of driving – 5 over about 5 years ago. No empathy from the cop at all.

Comments:
now nags head has changed the speed limit here from 50 to 45. they have cops sitting there now with radar guns. ive seen several people pulled here. it is disgusting. they rack the tourists down here and then locals in the off season when the cop to people ratio is huge.

I used to live directly across form this spot and you are correct. It is very hard to determine when you are in the zone during enforcement hours. There absolutely should be a flashing light as, like you stated, tourists have enough trouble reading the street signs at 50 mph.
