Outside Calvert, Texas on Hwy 6 North

First, this is a interesting comment from the police chief of Calvert, Texas. “For some, Calvert has a reputation of being a speed trap, and that’s a stigma I want to eliminate.” Of course, this is a political saying that she obviously does not live by on a daily basis due to what I witnessed earlier today and from my readings online of speed traps in Texas.
Earlier today, I was given a ticket in a speed trap. I was exiting the town of Calvert, and there was no business or home in site. Ahead, I saw a speed limit sign and I thought it was the speed limit sign letting drivers know that the 75 mph speed could resume. In reality, it was a 55 mph speed limit sign (which the speed had been, so why re-iterate). Even more interesting is that only about 30 feet (at most) from the re-iterated 55 mph speed limit sign was the one for 75 mph, letting drivers know they could resume highway speeds. Anyway, police chief was sitting in a very nice police SUV, paid for by out of town drivers, right next to the 55 mph sign. Needless to say, she pulled me over and gave me a ticket. She was not friendly in the least and did not allow me to even talk, except to demand to know if the address on the driver’s license was correct. (I am a small female, @ 100 lbs. with several young children in the back seats of my SUV, all under the age of 10; clearly a non-threatening situation ). Upon returning from her vehicle and giving me the ticket, her language giving me the ticket dared me to fight the ticket in their little town court system. This is clearly the definition of a Speed Trap.

Comments:
I encountered the same thing when I got a ticket there about a decade ago. The officer who pulled me over wouldn't let me explain anything. It must be something they go over in meetings. "Don't Let Citizens Talk Back." And the guy was paranoid about me getting my wallet out of the console. I thought he was going to pull his gun or have a seizure. He was Barney Fife after drinking four liters of soda pop. You would have thought I was John Dillinger or Clyde Barrow. Calvert is a has-been farming town. It's now relegated to that most pitiful of plights; a town of antique shops. Of course the sales taxes from those businesses probably comes to about $243.56 a week. There's a few convenience stores and a DQ. Getting forced donations from people who are eight mph over the speed limit is their way of getting revenue.

Very small town trying to pay their salaries by harassing out of towners passing through! Got stopped for "no trailer lights" coming in to town because I had already dropped my speed before they caught me. Had flashers going on my trailer but no running lights(hence why I had my emergency flashers on) got a ticket and the officer spent a few minutes inspecting everything else on my trailer and truck looking for anything else he could write up towards his monthly bonus! Little towns like this will be in a world of hurt when they make it illegal for police forces in TX to use traffic tickets as a revenue stream!

I was stopped after failing to notice the abrupt speed reduction... which only lasts for the few feet that is the town of Calvert. The officer was driving some kind of SUV police vehicle. The scariest part of this stop was that the officer smelled of alcohol to the point that the odor lingered in my car after I drove off. Be very careful here. I have not had a ticket in well over a decade, and this one was unnerving. An outside agency needs to look into what is going on in Calvert.
