The City of Portage has zero speed cams. All of the cameras you observe mounted on mast arms throughout the City are for managing traffic flow, i.e. signal timing. Our city leaders recognize that maintenance of buried pavement sensors is more expensive over time and that they are greatly affected by water, snow, ice, truck traffic, pavement deterioration, etc. Although this artery (Sprinkle Road) is maintained by the County of Kalamazoo, the City of Portage participated in the recent rebuild of this intersection and added new mast arms and the traffic flow cams. The City also uses the cams to quickly provide green signals during non-peak hours to minimize vehicle stops and maximize fuel economy for its citizens and visitors.
